Glenwood House Little Glens Pre-School is located in George. Glenwood House, situated at the foot of the majestic Outeniqua Mountains with breath-taking views of the beautiful countryside has managed to change all that. The seed which is Glenwood germinated when a group of parents, unable to secure enrolment at local schools and who wanted superior education for their children, decided to establish an institution which would pursue the excellence they required. George has become a destination of choice for families wanting to semi-grate to a more tranquil, safe and secure environment.
Many schools in the area have to accommodate between 35 and 45 pupils per class. Up until recently, parents have had to send their children away to find superior quality private schooling. This is no longer necessary. Glenwood House fulfils the important and immediate need that has arisen in George and its surrounding areas. Our classes accommodate a maximum of 26 learners throughout the entire school.
We provide a broad, balanced education to children from the Pre-School phase to Matric (Grade 000 12). The school encourages independent, critical and creative thinking within the framework of respect, freedom (within acceptable boundaries) and a morally acceptable value system. We feel that this approach helps the children to make decisions and ultimately take responsibility for their actions.
Glenwoods philosophy is to offer holistic mainstream education, which will help the children develop all-round skills and abilities, catering for the body, mind, social and emotional development and well-being, and for the spiritual development of each and every child. The school has an overt Christian ethos which underlies all activities that are on offer. Glenwood pupils are ultimately prepared for the exit examinations of the Independent Examinations Board (IEB), a qualification that is internationally portable.
Glenwood House is a well-organised school with proud traditions. Pupils are expected to uphold the disciplinary code of the school at all times. We demand absolute loyalty to the school and endeavour to instil a sense of pride in the pupils which is characteristic of the upper echelon of private schools in the country.
Our school emphatically supports nation building and our pupils are taught to be proudly South African. We provide a challenging environment designed to positively motivate and stimulate our pupils to achieve their maximum potential.
Our Pre-Preparatory school, Little Glens, focuses on teaching young children to become happy, confident and competent. We believe that good self-esteem leads to spontaneous and experimental learning, which will lead to school readiness and development of cognitive (particularly reading and mathematics) and non-cognitive skills.
Non-cognitive skills, such as attention, effort, initiative and behaviour are a very important part of our programme. The children are taught to love one another and respect one anothers differences. They are taught to be kind and considerate, and to grow and develop good life skills.
We believe that a relaxed, fun environment helps the Little Glens to cope with the physical, perceptual, social, emotional and academic demands of the school arena. Our skills focus is on language and pre-reading as well as cognitive, physical, gross- and fine motor and emotional skills.
The school is committed to fostering strong communication and close co-operation with our parents. We have two notable social events each year. We have several notable social events each year. In February, the Grade 0 families are invited for our annual Gr 0 Camp out at Herolds Bay Beach resort. This is well supported, and a wonderful opportunity for families to get to know each other better.
The Summer Splash is held in the first term and is all about having fun with water games. The playground is transformed into a water wonderland and the children have a wonderful time getting wet and enjoying the summer weather. Each class has delicious eats and drinks on sale. This event is enjoyed by the whole family.
Our International Food Fair brings a festive atmosphere to our annual school concert, usually held in October. Other special days that are big celebrations at Little Glens are: Mothers day, Fathers day, Grandparents day and, of course, the graduation ceremony for our Grade 0's. We regularly invite guests to entertain and educate our children through puppet shows, visits from Community Helpers and going on several outings during the year.
Glenwood House School is active in all aspects of social responsibility. The Little Glens get involved in various projects, helping people and the environment.
We eagerly participate in the annual George Art Eisteddfod and each year our Little Glens are awarded highest honours.
We also offer aftercare facilities on our premises. Please see more information under Glenwood House School Aftercare.
