Stellenbosch Laerskool is located in Stellenbosch. Stellenbosch Primary School's story begins long, long ago. Before any of you or your parents were born, there was a place where students could learn how to become teachers. They called it the Denenoord Training School. It was in the same place where the Hofmeyr Hall is today. The students felt the need to practice their lessons on children.
Therefore, in 1925, a group of five toddlers gathered in a room at the college. Miss. MCThierry (the head of the college) asked if they could start a school with the group of children. They were simply called the Denneoord model school. That was actually the beginning of our school. Once the pre-primary pupils had to go to grade one, they had to go to Bloemhof, because it was the only primary school in Stellenbosch at the time.
In 1932 the college became too small for all the students and they had to make a plan. Larger buildings were the solution. The entire college then moved to a larger building, namely the Rozenburg homestead and the school had to move. They then changed the name to Die Rozenburg Primary School because the school was now in the large Rozenburg homestead, or house.
On October 10, 1933, the Department of Education authorized the establishment of a one-teacher farm school. Twenty pupils and Miss. Gertruida Pohl became the first full-time teacher on April 1, 1934. The department decides to rename it again: Denneoord Model / Kindergarten and Farm School. In 1936 there were already 45 children in the school and the two full-time teachers were Mrs. M. Pickerell (grades one to three) and Miss. AS Gelderblom (grades four to eight).
In 1958, many parents asked the school board to build a new primary school on the east side of town. After many plans and discussions, it was decided to build the school so big that there would be two classes in each grade. It was also the first school whose classrooms would face north. They started building the school in August 1967 and on October 31, 1969, everyone moved to the new school buildings we still use today. A picture of this hangs in the foyer.
Mr JAM van Schoor was the first principal and under his leadership a school uniform and school song was chosen. We are proud today that DJ Opperman wrote our school song and that Stellenbosch composer Hubert du Plessis made the tune. Our weapon was designed by C Pama. Mr van Schoor was the principal for thirty years before retiring in 1995.
Mr. Pollard followed him for a while, but from January 1997 Mr. Hawkie de Villiers our principal. The number of learners has doubled and several excellent facilities have been added to the infrastructure. It includes an Activity Room, Music Centre, pool, two equipped computer centres and fourteen new classrooms. We are privileged to have a principal of Mr Hawkie de Villiers - visionary adventurer and pioneer by excellence, behind the wheel. The vision and innovative leadership he reveals can be seen tangibly in the excellent facilities developed under his leadership and foresight over the past several years.
Even more, it can be seen in the happy staff and learners of our school. He has the unique ability to instil enthusiasm and exploit potential, leading a school that is constructively positioned for the future and delivering learners who are positive and add value to our society.
