Mitchell House is an Independent co-educational English school catering for learners from Grade 000 to Grade 12. Established in 1994, affiliated to ISASA and fully accredited by UMALUSI, our school is situated on a high-lying, sixteen-hectare site, providing spectacular views of the North, in the city of Polokwane.
We educate for life. Our faith in God inspires us to be people of hope and intention, who are united by a set of values that shape our vision and practice of education. Committed to an inclusive education of mind, body, and spirit, we help young people to become happy, confident, independent, competent, and resilient people of hope and personal integrity, who have a deep sense of justice and compassion, and feel a sense of social responsibility to transform the world around them.
Mitchell House recognises the multi-faith aspect of our school community: and we encourage all learners to respect the faiths of others.
Our Preparatory School caters for learners from Grade 1 to Grade 7 and divided into two phases: the Junior Phase (Grade 1 to 3) and the Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 to 7).
Junior Phase (JP)
Core learning areas in the JP are social and emotional development, cognitive and perceptual development, and physical development. These are critical pillars upon which our teaching and learning are based.
The CAPS document is used as a guideline and the curriculum is supplemented by methodologies and strategies that enhance and grow our learners’ learning. Reading and Spelling is based on the Time2Read methodology, and the Number sense methodology and programme is followed in Mathematics.
Our teaching and learning is focused on the inclusion and explicit instruction of these essential 21st century skills as we strive to develop:
• Critical, Creative and Reflective Thinkers
• Skilled / Competent / Able Researchers
• Effective Communicators
• Capable and Confident Collaborators and
• Resilient individuals who are able to Manage themselves.
Our aim is to create an environment where our pupils are happy, secure and loved but also stretched and challenged. To produce a child who is adventurous, kind, brave and confident is our ultimate goal.
Intermediate Phase (IP)
The IP is a special place where the goal is to make every child feel welcome and safe. We believe that children learn best when they feel secure and happy. We firmly uphold the school’s values and believe that every child has the ability to succeed through determination, hard work and grit.
Our curriculum is based on “Growing Our Shadow” and is informed by CAPS. It is enriched with the development of critical thinking skills and creative learning. We believe that a child’s education should be holistic, and thus offer not only a superior academic programme, but also encourage active involvement in both sport and cultural events. We also offer experiential learning through integrated projects, science competitions, literature competitions, debating, excursions and the much-anticipated annual tours, where children develop their leadership and problem-solving skills.
Our Learner Support programme is integrated into all our lessons. The teachers equip our grades 4 to 7 learners with the necessary organisational and study skills during their everyday lessons. Technological skills are also taught.
Our Council system ensures that each and every grade 7 child gets the opportunity to demonstrate his or her leadership, communication and collaboration skills. Our focus is on Service Leadership, developing initiative, follow-through empathy, selflessness, humility, authenticity, caring, collaboration, compassion, honesty, open-mindedness, patience and self-awareness. The children are guided by teacher facilitators.
