Ridge Junior Primary School Pre-School is a dual medium, family-orientation school in Pietermaritzburg where little people are nurtured. Each child is special and is treated as such, each with their own talent, potential and needs.
Ridge Junior Primary School was established in 1967 at 93 Ridge Road when the junior primary section of Pelham School could no longer be accommodated. Mrs. M Schoeman, the founding principal, 4 teachers and support staff opened the doors to lively youngsters on the new premises.
Ridge has continued to serve the Scottsville and surrounding community, specialising in first phase education in English and Afrikaans medium, for 50 years, currently accommodating 730 children and 70 academic and support staff.
Our motto Semper Ad Optima is lived each day as we continue to provide exciting learning opportunities for our children, ensuring that their days are filled with appropriate learning experiences for the future. We, along with their parents, celebrate the growth and achievements of our children, and aim to equip them with the skills required for the step into senior primary as independent, responsible and well-balanced pupils.
We are so proud to regularly see the names of past Ridge learners in leadership positions in high schools, and amongst top achievers.
Ridge Roots was established in 1994 in response to the growing need for quality Grade R education in the city. Roots started with two Grade R classes in two prefabs in the school grounds. The demand for places at Ridge Roots has grown steadily and the school currently has three Grade RR classes, four English Grade R classes and one Afrikaans class with Grade RR and R combined.
Our pre-primary school follows the NCS (National Curriculum Statement) syllabus where focus is on skills in Grade RR and on concepts in Grade R. Both grades follow the Time2Read reading program. Psychomotor forms part of the learners weekly program where learners are developed in a holistic way. During Psychomotor, children are taught to solve problems in a non-aggressive manner. Learners are given the opportunity to develop and progress from an egocentric to a decentralized state, from a sensory area to a cognitive one.
