Sonitus Skool Pre-School is located in Pretoria. Sonitus School, the first school for hard-of-hearing students, officially opened its doors on April 10, 1973. This historic event was preceded by months of planning and hard work, but in the end, this dream came true.

Various names, including Tjienkerientje, Bergsig and Tuinrand, have been proposed as names for the new school, under the control of the Transoranje Institute for Extraordinary Education. However, the name Sonitus was decided upon. Sonitus is derived from the Latin word meaning sound or noise. The school therefore strives to bring meaningful sound to the hard of hearing.

With the opening of the school, 40 pupils will be enrolled here. Some of the pupils were transferred from Transorange School for the Deaf while others had never been to school, some pupils came from ordinary schools or from schools for other disabilities. The pupils were scholastically divided from toddlers to St 5. The school showed a slow growth in pupil numbers, but by the end of 1973 there were 55 pupils.
