Laerskool DF Malherbe is located in Vanderbjlpark. DF Malerbe Primary School was initially known as the Eighth Primary School. It was the first Primary school south of the Vereeniging Paris road. Because the building, which was already under construction, was not yet completed, the school was opened in a prefabricated building at Budd Street. The buildings once housed Transvalia High School and had been in disuse for more than a year.
Some of the classrooms were also removed and you could see a beautiful garden of foundations. The school was opened on January 19, 1965. Rev de Witt continued with the reading of the scriptures and the prayer after which the acting principal Mr IWF Swart welcomed.
Mr Koos Havenga, the Provincial Councillor, also expressed a word of welcome and congratulations, on behalf of the parents and the Administration. The school started with 622 pupils and they were all transported by bus to the school. Soon the number of pupils increased to ± 850 and each hockey room had to be used as a classroom.
The current permanent principal, Mr FJ Coetsee assumed service on 1 January 1966. The school reopened with 1039 pupils on 18 January 1966 and the number grew during the quarter to 1061. Consequently, the prefabricated building was too small for all to house the pupils. Fortunately, part of the new building was completed, so six Grade I classes with 223 pupils were transferred to the new building. Head control has become difficult as the building is 5 km apart.
As the rest of the classrooms in the new school building were completed by the end of March, the Department considered it appropriate to divide the school into two. Thus, a new primary school, namely the Ninth Primary School (Primary School Proposal) was opened on April 19, 1966 with 330 pupils in the prefabricated building. Eight of DF Malherbe's staff members were also transferred to the Ninth Primary School.
DF Malherbe Primary School moved in with the 772 pupils from the same date in the new school building, although part of the building has not yet been completed. The office and the Administrative Department are currently housed in a storeroom adjacent to the graduation room. Although we did not have a sports facility for the first few years, the school nevertheless participated in rugby, netball, cricket and athletics.
