Cornwall Hill College Pre-School is located in Centurion. Cornwall Hill College's educational philosophy entails the creation of a solid foundation for its pupils by providing ample opportunities and exceptional facilities for them to excel in academic, sporting and cultural spheres, while still retaining traditional values of honesty, integrity, compassion and responsibility.
In the Pre-School Phase, emphasis is placed on exploration and discovery within a framework of personal and social responsibility. Within a nurturing environment, we plan our curriculum around individual needs for growth, creating opportunities for our children to become independent by learning to take care of themselves, to work out their problems and to become responsible for their actions. Close attention is paid to each child's progress.
Ongoing observation of the children's behaviour, participation and progress is documented and shared with parents
verbally, graphically and through written reports. We believe that parents are a child's first and most important teachers. It is in his or her own family that the child first gains a basic sense of trust and security and first learns to respond to others. Pre-School is a bridge between home and formal school and we aim to become partners with parents, as together we seek the child's optimum growth.
Our school offers guidance to parents in understanding how young children grow and learn. We also offer the children a warm and loving "first school experience" to supplement and enrich their lives.
Curriculum
The Pre-School Programme offers learning opportunities which expose the child to skills, attitudes and concepts for formal learning. It requires active participation on the part of the child. We make use of an approach which recognizes the inherent holistic nature of the child. It seeks to develop all aspects of each child. i.e. the social; emotional; intellectual; aesthetic and physical potential of each child, through active participation in the learning process.
This approach recognizes that each child is a unique individual who learns and develops at his own pace and in his own way. The learning environment is designed to develop individual potential - recognizing and respecting differences. It provides structured learning opportunities incorporating a variety of experiences, activities and media.
All three grades work at developing these skills at an age-appropriate level, using a variety of methodologies to develop these necessary skills, attitudes and concepts. The learning process of the young child follows certain clearly identifiable stages. These stages often overlap and a child may be able to experience learning activities in more than one stage of the process at any one time. It is not accurate or meaningful to say in which stage a child is functioning. What is important is to know that real learning is encouraged by providing young children with several different ways to explore concepts.
The teacher presents concepts to the group as a whole, after which subgroups participate in a variety of activities that reinforce these concepts. The teacher works in-depth with a small group while the other subgroups complete activities independently. Within the context of small groups children participate in a variety of planned learning experiences in which they interact, explore and experiment. The teacher's interaction with the class as a whole, as well as with the small groups ensures that every child is involved throughout the learning process.
