Integrated Secondary Level (ISek) - German as a Foreign Language (DaF)

The integrated secondary level is an English-speaking branch of the German International School Johannesburg, which children without knowledge of German can attend from the 5th grade.

This branch of school was founded in 1989 with the aim of giving children from formerly disadvantaged groups the chance to get a good education.

English Medium High School

Since January 2012, the DSJ has also been open to English-speaking students with an “English Medium High School” from Grade 8.

The newly established branch now also offers non-German-speaking students the opportunity to prepare very successfully for the IEB's National Senior Certificate.

German is taught as a second foreign language. This gives the graduates of this branch the opportunity to assert themselves in a globalized society. More than 600 German companies have a mainstay in South Africa, so future graduates from the English Medium High School branch can expand their professional career opportunities in the best possible way. Multilingualism also opens up access to other cultures and nationalities.

The combined branch

With this combined bilingual branch, students acquire both the German International Abitur as well as the South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) within three years. This gives you the best-qualified university entrance qualification in both countries. The German International Abitur is recognized as a university entrance qualification in more than 170 countries around the world.

NSC Branch

The DSJ is affiliated with the independent South African examination board, the Independent Examination Board (IEB). This enables the students with the National Senior Certificate (NSC), also known as Matrik, to obtain the South African state qualification in the 12th grade. In addition, the German language diploma offers direct admission to German universities. Students of the English Medium High School write the German Diploma Level 1, which requires a bridge year to study in a German-speaking country.
